I spent a fair amount of time in HK in the 70s, courtesy of the Royal Navy. A good “run” is a trip up the Peak on HK island itself. Stone Cutters Island is interesting for a day on the beach. Nathan Road in Kowloon has some great shops. Going out for a meal on one of the floating restaurants in the new territories is great fun, choose what fish your going to eat live from the tank. A trip up to the border (former) with Red China is a fascinating train journey, Take your camera. There used to be an ice rink at a place called lai chikok, right off the beaten track, people there very friendly. Wanchai on HK island itself used to be very seedy, girly bars, strip joints, drunken matelots everywhere. But it’s probably all changed now, try it happy memories.

Hong Kong has loads to offer!
During daytime you can go to the Ocean Park or Hong Kong Disneyland, both theme parks have dozens of ride to keep you busy for the day. Alternatively, you might want to consider shopping, while Hong Kong is a shoppers’ heaven with tons of shopping malls all around Hong Kong, especially in Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok (where you can pick up some cheap stuff in the Ladies Market), also some high-end shopping malls in Admiralty and Central. Besides those, paying a visit to the outer islands (Cheung Chau, Lamma Island) may be an excellent way to experience the local and traditional lifestyle in Hong Kong. Sai Kung is also a place you might want to consider if you are interested in having a Hong Kong style seafood experience, in addition, the place offers a wonder sea view. One last thing you shouldn’t miss out is a trip on the star ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon) to Central (Hong Kong Island), it costs only 2 Hong Kong Dollars if I am not wrong.
At night, if you love partying, Lan Kwai Fong is a place where can’t miss out. It is located in Central, a little place where clubs, pubs, and bars are located, and is a must-go place in Hong Kong even if you are not interested in crazy nightlife. However, before starting your nightlife, you should go to the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui to look at the spectacular skyline of Hong Kong at night, which you will be totally amazed if you haven’t seen it before. Also, you might want to go to the Victoria Peak to see the stunning view of the whole Hong Kong island, Victoria Habor and the Kowloon Peninsula from high above.

If you have time, try going to the neighboring Macau by ferry where you can experience an Eastern city with heavy Portuguese influence, along with those casinos all over Macau. Also, only if you have a Chinese visa, you might want to cross the Hong Kong – China border by train to pick up some extremely cheap stuff and have you and your girlfriend massaged (they are good), after those, go back to Hong Kong and compare & contrast the developing China and the developed Hong Kong.

Definitely try to visit Victoria Peak and the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island (if you’re not afraid of heights!). The best area for nightlife is Lan Kwai Fong, though it’s mostly expats and foreigners there.
